Dancing inmates

Quite a while ago, we posted a video of the now world-renowned dancing inmates of Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center to recall the juvenile exploits of classmates George Hizon and Keith dela Cruz (Usapang lasing). And the video above is their latest, an interpretation of Michael Jackson’s “They don’t care about us”.

What makes this performance very special is that it was choreographed by no less than Travis Payne, Jackson’s long-time choreographer, who traveled all the way to the Philippines to mount this dance spectacle. Payne was accompanied by Daniel Celebre and Dres Reid, two of the dancers who were  supposed to join Jackson’s entourage in a series of concerts.

Unfortunately, the production did not make it to the Sony Pictures’ This is it tribute to the king of pop for failing to beat the deadline. Nevertheless, the video has become a certified YouTube sensation. Last we look,  it has been viewed by more than two million people around the world.

Amazing stuff, this is. These are the only detainees I know that have been going places, so to speak. The prison administration should be commended for introducing dancing as a way of reforming their inmates. A far cry from the brutal and inhuman condition usually depicted in many a film.

    Nice blog, guys.
