Brilliante Mendoza

Pinoy director Brillante Mendoza has just made history by winning the Best Director award in this year’s edition of the Cannes Film Festival for “Kinatay”. This is the first time that a Filipino has won an award in Cannes, which is considered to be one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world.

Mendoza’s oeuvre includes “Serbis” (also a finalist in Cannes last year), “Masahista”, “Tirador”, “Foster Child”, and “Kaleldo” .

    This is really something for the local film industry, and the Philippines for that matter.

    Imagine, Brillante Mendoza is now in the company of past winners such as Costa Gavras, Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman, Robert Altman, etc. And to think also that those he beat were no lightweights either, like Quentin Tarantino, Jane Campion, Ang Lee, etc.

    Dapat nga ang mga katulad ni Brillante ang sinasalubong ng mga tao sa airport, as has been observed by many. Pero ang Mandaluyong City government lang yata ang may pakulo sa kanya.

    And I find it sad that we may never get the chance to see this movie because, as Brillante said, the Philippine censors might not approve it without cuts because of its violent theme. Hayyy …
