Remember Larry Ramos’ Nostalgic rumination on Tondo, particularly that part of Pritil-Juan Luna-Tayuman where he was born and spent his growing-up years? We are posting here some photos that show the changes the area has undergone. This photo reportage is also for those who haven’t visited Tondo since moving out of the place.
This is the new Pritil Market. Dito tayo madalas isama noon ng ating mga nanay sa pamamalengke. Laki na ng pinagbago, di na siya gusgusin.
Jose Rizal Elementary School at the corner of Tayuman and Juan Luna. This is the alma mater of many IV-1 peps.
Across Rizal Elementary School stands Puregold Supermarket, which is now occupying a portion of the lot owned by Alhambra Cigars (buhay pa ba ito?)
Inside Puregold is a Jollibee fast-food restaurant, from the window of which this photo was shot. If ever we decide to hold our next meeting in Tondo, we can have it here (or better still, at the other Jollibee outlet near LDHS’s former main campus) to recreate that high-school-days ambiance that we all miss. That is, kung papayag si George Hizon (bakit walang McDo sa Tondo?).
And this last photo is a shot of Juan Luna St. leading towards Gagalangin. Take note of the high-rise building in the foreground. That’s the spot where Eddie Roberto and his family’s house used to stand.
We would like to thank Lito Parungo’s brother, Jon, for these pics. He promised to send us more Tondo snapshots soon.
